Sri Chinmoy claimed to be Nolini Kanta Gupta ‘s Secretary ; therefore Sri Aurobindo ‘s Secretary’s Secretary . On the other hand he claimed not to be Sri Aurobindo or Mother’s disciple . This is the way that Chinmoy was introduced to seekers during conferences held to recruit new disciples.
These claims do not make any sense at all and everybody living at the Ashram was SA and Mother Disciple, without exception. But the audience had little or no knowledge of Aurobindo path, not to speak of who was Nolini.
Chinmoy wrote a book about his Secretarial activities which title is “How Nolini-da wanted me to be his secretary“. You will admit that the title in it-self brings in even more confusion . The Sri Aurobindo Ashram Archives has denied, thru am e-mail sent to me in 2007 by Peter Heehs , that Chinmoy was Nolini’s secretary. The SAAA insisted that many people worked with Nolini and Chinmoy was one of them and that’s all.
Sam Spanier , in the Matagiri magazine , wrote that when he first arrived at the ashram he met Chinmoy that was a Mother’s disciple.Everyone who was a member of the Ashram, the entire family of Chinmoy, all his brothers and sisters, were her devotees.
Chinmoy writes in his book The Oneness of the Eastern Heart and the Western Mind the following:
my prayerful heart is all gratitude to the Divine Mother for granting
me the invaluable blessing-opportunity to be allowed to meditate every morning very early in front of the Mother’s and Sri Aurobindo’s pictures at the place where they used to give Darshan four times a year and also at the two doors of Sri Aurobindo’s main room. This unimaginable privilege started in 1958 and continued until 1964 when I came to America.
Sri Chinmoy has also published a book called “Aurobindo’s Cambridge and Sri Aurobindo’s Mother India” . Its date of publication is 21 November, 1997. On page 20, Chinmoy writes:
My prayerful heart is all gratitude to the Divine Mother for
granting me the invaluable blessing-opportunity to be allowed to meditate every morning very early in front of the Mother’s and Sri Aurobindo’s pictures at the place where they used to give Darshan four times a year and also at the two doors of Sri Aurobindo’s main room. This unimaginable privilege started in 1958 and continued until 1964 when I came to America. In the beginning, I used to pray and meditate for five minutes and then, gradually, gradually, after a few months’ time, it went up to about two hours. My soulful joy knew no bounds, specially when the Mother herself watched and passed by me as I was praying and meditating. This happened our or five times
over the course of the years. With my heart’s tearful devotion, I place those Heaven-touched moments of my aspiration-life at the Feet of the Divine Mother.
From all these texts we can assess that he was at that time a person who considered himself a disciple of Sri Aurobindo (and possibly even the Mother); meditating on their pictures , as he asks his own disciples to do , is at the core of the guru-disciple relation as he understands it. He meditated on their pictures because he considered himself their disciple.
Everyone who had access to that building and that room (by special permission only) would have been a devotee or disciple, it was not a privilege extended to the general public. He would not have been allowed in there by the Mother if he were not a disciple. If he was not a disciple, then he had to be a hypocrite, who was just going through the moves and putting on an appearance to fool others, including the Mother, by whom he liked to be seen…
